Google (SEO) Tips : Part 5 : What can I write about?

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Updating your site on a regular basis is good, but sometimes it is hard to know what to write. Here are some pointers.

  • What have you sold this week
  • Why did the person buy? What are they going to be doing with xyz. Meaning that people buy for lots of reasons, often not the one you thought!
  • Have you a new product or service, or made a change.
  • Remember your audience, if your new thing is technical, then write appropratitly. On the other hand if the person buying isn’t technical assume you are telling a family relative!
  • Remember benefits, not features and not from your point of view.
  • Perhaps your article is a comment on something that is happening in your sector. Create discussion!
  • Perhaps the best person for website updates is not the boss, but the person in sales or development. Dell computers have department bloggers and twitters, and these have been very good for the company.
  • And once written get someone else to read it and if needed print it out, you will see mistakes easier.

Google (SEO) Tips : Part 3 : Before doing a new site

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Research your keywords and key phrases

Make sure the keywords are good ones. Meaning that ‘boiler service’ is better than ‘leaky tap’.

Get your web people to check that people are actually searching for your service, meaning family lawyer will want to be found for family law, but more people are searching for divorce lawyer.

Your company name should always be page one. If it is a common name, make sure you also get this SEO’d.

Have some clear goals, meaning that being page 1 for choosing keywords will make a difference to your business.

Check out what your competition is doing, there are sites like Alexa which tell you were their sites rank against everyone else’s.

Get your copy professionally written by someone who knows how to write ‘sales copy’ and knows how to lace in the keywords.

Google (SEO) Tips : Part 2 : Do you need to be page one?

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

There is a lot of talk of being page 1 of google. When done right it can prove to be very successful for your company.

But being page 1 for the wrong words, can be a costly exercise.

Also factor in return, meaning that for every pound you spend you should be getting at least 5 times back.

Other marketing may provide better returns for your advertising spend.

Do the maths, if your product or service is of low value, you are going to need lots of sells. If there are lots of people looking to buy good, but if they aren’t think again.

A simple rule is that niche, hard to find items work well on the net. High street items can do well but needs lots of marketing spend.
